Jay Heeb

Welcome!

Welcome to the Alhambra High School Woodworking Program website.  I have been teaching Woodworking, Cabinet Making, and Construction Technology, at Alhambra, since 1984.  During this time the program has evolved into a state-of-the-art, high tech system of inter-connected courses.  I look forward to the future and the continued success of our program.

COURSES

Woodworking I:  Students are taught the safe use of the tools, materials, and processes needed to work daily in our shop.  Students are required to pass a safety exam prior to working in the shop.  After passing the safety exam, students work daily in the shop constructing assigned projects.  The first project the students will build is jewelry box and the second is a breadbox.  Students will be required to fill out a time card each work day, describing the work they completed.  The time cards will be graded daily.  Each student will have an assigned clean up job that must be completed each work day.  Clean up will be graded each work day.  Student progress will be checked every two weeks.  Students are expected to meet posted project deadlines.

Woodworking II:  Students review all safety procedures and learn the operation of the advanced machinery in our shop. Students are required to pass a safety exam prior to working in the shop;  Wood II students work daily in the shop and construct a Shaker 4-Leg Table and a Shake Candlestand Table (3-Leg Table).  Student progress will be checked every two weeks.  Students are expected to meet posted project deadlines.

Cabinet Making:  All Cabinet Making students are required to pass a safety exam.  First-year Cabinet Making students build a Regulator Clock and a small cabinet with a drawer and door.  Second-year students build and Adirondack Chair, or they may make a project that they design. They also work collaboratively on a variety community woodworking projects.  Student progress will be checked every two weeks.  Students are expected to meet posted project deadlines.

Construction Technology:  Construction students will learn basic residential construction skills.  A safety exam must be passed prior to working with any equipment.  Students will build a scale model houses and a 8'X10' gable roof, storage sheds.  Guests speakers from a variety of trades will have open discussions with students on a monthly basis.  Students that successfully complete this course will receive 4 units of DVC credit.  A final exam will be given at the end of the year.
